MEN’S LACROSSE
If the Gaels men’s lacrosse team starts this season like they finished the last one, then their chances at competing for the Baggataway Cup will have skyrocketed.
In ’99 the Gaels posted a horrible regular season record of two wins and six losses, placing them eighth in the Ontario University Field Lacrosse Association, barely good enough for the final berth in the consolation playoffs.
The Jekyl and Hyde team then performed an about face in the post season. The Gaels demolished fourth seeded Laurier, and then quashed sixth seeded Carleton in the consolation final in an 18-6 romp. The victory granted the Gaels the MacDonald Trophy, the honour bestowed on the league’s consolation champs.
Not being an OUA sanctioned sport, the men’s team doesn’t receive the same luxuries and funding as other ratified varsity teams. Spending the season in relative squalor, the Gaels are known for their propensity to sleep in rented mini-vans during road trips.
Though a try-out schedule wasn’t available before press deadline, training camp for the squad doesn’t start until the first week of classes on the North Field.
