Stephie Leitch to be the next EngSoc President

The ILC was charged with anticipation as approximately 50 students awaited the results of the Engineering Society (EngSoc) executive elections, where five out of 10 candidates were crowned victorious.

Stephie Leitch, Sci ’27, was elected the next EngSoc president. The only uncontested candidate, Ella Doris, Sci ’28, was elected the next vice-president (operations), accepting the position with grace and humour. The two-way race for vice-president (finance & administration) saw Hadrian Cornwell, Sci ’27, emerge triumphant. Finally, the role of vice-president (student affairs) went to Panav Velpandi, Sci’27, in a three-choice vote.

“I’m very excited for the year ahead, to work with the executives and enact the vision that we’ve promised you in our campaigns. Thank you,” Leitch said in her speech after being announced the winner.

All winners thanked their peers for voting and supporting their campaigns, as well as they all expressed excitement and ambition for their new roles and the upcoming year. “Thank you for trusting me. I’ll give it my all,” Velpandi promised in his speech—a sentiment that seemed to be shared among all the new executives.

During her victory speech, Doris echoed the humour of her predecessor and one of the Co-Editors of Golden Words, Jacob Esdale, Sci ’26, exclaiming “I’m really excited to be the next vice-president of operations and I’ll make sure that they keep on operating.”

After the results were announced, the cheerful EngSoc community headed off, whooping and hollering, to Clark Pub to celebrate another successful election season with Leitch at the centre being hugged and congratulated by fellow students.

The new executive team will assume their positions on May 1.
