In December, Governor General David Johnston, Law ’66, LLD ’91, announced 95 new appointments to the Order of Canada, four of them Queen’s alumni.
The Order of Canada, established in 1967, is a civilian honour that recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
Peter Milliken, Arts ’68, LLD ’12, was appointed as an Officer, the second highest rank of the Order of Canada. He is the longest-serving Speaker of the House and was the longest-serving MP for Kingston and the Islands.
He’s now a Fellow in the Queen’s School of Policy Studies.
Michael Macmillan, ArtSci ’78, is the founder of Atlantis Films. He co-authored the book Tragedy in the Commons: Former Members of Parliament Speak Out about Canada’s Failing Democracy and also founded Samara Canada, a non-profit organization that works to engage Canadians with politics.
Dr. Brenda Gallie, Meds ’69, is an ophthalmologist at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto who has conducted groundbreaking research on a rare cancer of children’s eyes, retinoblastoma.
Dr. Norman Marcon, Meds ’62, is a doctor and researcher at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. His work on gastrointestinal diseases and in promoting the latest advances in therapeutic endoscopy is being honoured.
The new appointments will be honoured at a ceremony in Ottawa later this year.
