It was a complete effort on Sept. 7 as the Gaels dominated the University of Toronto Blues by a score of 105-0 in the season opener at Nixon Field, marking new Head Coach John Lavery’s first win as the mastermind behind Queen’s Men’s Rugby.
Lavery, who previously served as the Head Coach of the Concordia Stingers, joined the Gaels in May. During his tenure with the Stingers, he led the team to a conference championship in 2021.

The Gaels are undefeated against the Blues, and they maintained this record, flawlessly handing them a demoralizing shutout while flooding them with try after try.
The team was led by Marcus D’Acre, ArtSci ’26, who recorded two tries and seven converts, totalling 24 points. The Gaels were also backed up by third-year Owen Lee, Comm ’26, who exploded for four tries.
Other Gaels who contributed to the number on the scoreboard were Daniel Svoboda, Kin ’25, James Hohmann, Sci ’27, Captain Eric Gooden, Sci ’24, Benny Greenstein, ArtSci ’27, and Connor Gittens, Comm ’25.
While the game against the Blues didn’t expose the Gaels and their new head coach to much adversity, it did provide a strong foundation for the team to build on for the remainder of the season.
The Men’s Rugby team takes to the pitch next on Sept. 14, where they’ll kick off against the Guelph Gryphons on their home turf.
