Women’s Basketball
The Women’s Basketball team spent the weekend in Ottawa, tipping off against the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Jan. 31 in a 53-60 loss, then playing against the top-ranked Carleton Ravens on Feb. 1, where they lost 63-72.
To start the game, the Gaels capitalized on the Gee-Gee’s inability to shoot from beyond the arc, outscoring Ottawa 17-14 in the first frame.
In the second quarter, the Gaels saw their lead disappear after being dominated by the Gee-Gees in the paint.
The start of the second half looked promising for the Gaels, climbing back to a three-point lead over Ottawa. Unfortunately, this didn’t hold, as the Gee-Gees exploded in the fourth quarter and won the game 60-53.
On the bright side, first-year guard Brooke Hussey, Kin ’28, continues to grow as a star for the Gaels, recording a game-high 19 points and playing an exhausting 34 minutes.
The following night, the Gaels found themselves in much deeper waters as they faced the first-seed Carleton Ravens.
It was a valiant effort from the Gaels, and having shot much better than the previous night, they kept it close against the province’s top Women’s Basketball program.
Amy Hagman, Kin ’26, recorded a game-high 20 points. However, this wasn’t enough, as the Ravens’ Dorcas Buisa and Jacqueline Urban exploded for over 20 points each on 50+ per cent field goal percentages.
The first quarter ended with the Gaels leading by one point. However, this was the final time the Gaels would see a lead, as they were outscored by 10 points throughout the remainder of the game.
Men’s Basketball
The Men’s Basketball team found similar results in Ottawa this weekend, losing back-to-back games against the top-ranked Gee-Gees and second-place Carleton Ravens.
Prior to their three-game losing skid, the Gaels held a commanding lead over the first-seed but after losing to the second-place Gee-Gees and third-placed Ravens, the Gaels have slipped to third.
The Men’s Basketball team’s second and third-quarter shortcomings were to blame for their loss, conceding a point differential of -26 through the middle frames, ultimately resulting in the Gaels’ 13 point loss.
First-year golden boy Ollie Engen, ArtSci ’28, did all he could for the Gaels, scoring 23 points on a 66 per cent field goal percentage while recording seven rebounds and only three turnovers.
The defence was to blame for the Gaels’ loss, allowing four Gee-Gees to score 10 or more points, with seven total players scoring significant points against our Gaels.
The following night, on Feb. 1, the Gaels lost by their largest margin of the year, falling to the second-seed Carleton Ravens by 20 points, a 72-92 final.
Unlike their game the previous night, the Gaels fell into a deep, 13-point hole in the first quarter, eventually losing the game by 20 points.
The Gaels will need a huge bounce-back game on Feb. 7, where they’ll play the Nipissing Lakers on the road.
