Men’s basketball edge out Lakehead Thunderwolves
The men’s basketball team (5-3) turned in a strong performance against the Lakehead Thunderwolves (2-5) on Friday night, winning 64-58.
Led by fifth-years Tanner Graham and Jaz Bains, who combined for 38 points, the Gaels had trouble locking in their win. Going into the third quarter, they led by 34-33. But in the fourth, Queen’s outscored Lakehead 20-13 to come away with the victory.
Before the winter break, the Gaels have one more set of games to play. On Friday, they’ll travel to St. Catherines to play the Brock Badgers (5-4) and on Saturday they’re slated to play the McMaster Marauders (4-5) in Hamilton.
Women’s basketball lose big to Lakehead
In one of the biggest tests of their young season, the women’s basketball team (6-2) fell to the Lakehead Thunderwolves (7-1) on Friday night by a score of 76-64.
The Gaels kept the game tight through the first half, leading with 32-31 when the second quarter finished. Lakehead shot poorly in the first half and converted only 26.7 per cent of their shots onto the scoreboard.
Afterward, Lakehead showed why they’re tied for first in the OUA West. They shot 51.3 per cent in the final 24 minutes and outscored Queen’s 45-32, taking the game handily 76-64.
Queen’s is currently tied with Carleton for third in the OUA East with 12 points—only two behind UOttawa and six behind the undefeated Ryerson Rams. They’ll hit the road one last time before the break this weekend, with trips to Brock (3-6) and McMaster (7-2).
Men’s volleyball dominate Trent
The men’s volleyball team (7-2) brought their winning streak to five games over the weekend, beating Trent in three straight sets.
The Gaels showed up with a strong presence on Sunday, winning the first set 25-12 while making one error and 11 kills.
Although Trent gave Queen’s more of a test in the following pair of sets, the Gaels shut the door on a comeback. They won the second and third sets 25-19 and 25-22.
With the win, the Gaels head into the winter break with a 7-2 record. At this point last year, they were 4-3. Their record gives them an OUA-East best with 14 points.
Women’s volleyball close fall term with winning record
The women’s volleyball team (5-4) outmatched Trent on Saturday, earning convincing wins in three straight sets.
The Gaels came out firing on all cylinders in the first set, winning 25-11. Similar to the men’s game, Trent made a small comeback in the final two sets. However, Queen’s managed to win the second set 25-20, and narrowly took the third 25-22.
Statistically, the Gaels dominated Trent from all angles of the court. Queen’s landed 42 kills to Trent’s 16, and had a 39.5 per cent hitting percentage compared to Trent’s 5.7 per cent.
With the fall term officially at a close, the Gaels will be back in action on Jan. 18 against Guelph.
Women’s hockey defeat Laurier, fall to Waterloo
The women’s hockey team suffered a minor setback in their final fall term games against the Laurier Golden Hawks and Waterloo Warriors this weekend, winning against the former 1-0 and losing to the latter 5-2.
On Friday against Laurier, Queen’s got on the board early and didn’t let up until the final whistle.
Twelve minutes in, forward Addi Halladay scored her fifth goal of the season off a rebound. The Gaels held strong through the remainder of the game, killing four power plays and securing a 1-0 win. Goaltender Makenzie Arsenault picked up her third shutout of the season in the game.
Against Waterloo, the Gaels got off to a strong start in the first period, opening with goals from fourth-years Kaylie Dennis and Katrina Manoukarakis.
Their offensive push ended there, however, as Waterloo responded in the second period with two of their own goals. In the third, the Warriors broke open the tie with eight minutes to go, and went on to score two more in the game’s final four minutes.
With the next month off, the Gaels are strongly positioned in the OUA standings after 13 games. They’re currently tied with Nipissing for first in the conference with 24 points, and have 11 games left in their schedule before the playoffs begin in February.
