Golf finishes season in third

Dainty finishes second, Forbes places fifth

The men’s golf team went up against the best teams in the province in their final regular season tournament of the year on Tuesday and finished in third place at the McMaster Invitational.

The Gaels concluded the regular season in third place overall. Shooting a combined score of 301, the Gaels were just one stroke behind the second place Laurier Golden Hawks.

The Waterloo squad, led by amateur-circuit phenom Vic Cielsielski, trampled the field, winning by 10 strokes.

Cielsielski took first place with a course record of 68.

Queen’s Sean Dainty made his last tournament of the year count, trailing Cielsielski by two shots to

finish second in the 35-player field with a score of 70. Dainty’s teammate, Patrick Forbes, came in close behind, finishing fifth after shooting a 73. Head coach Bert Kea said he was happy with his team’s overall success heading into the playoffs. “The big thing is not giving back any shots to the people who are chasing us,” he said. The team will practice in St. Catharines on Sunday.

“We’re just working on playing up to potential,” he said, adding that he’s confident that his young

team, despite their inexperience, will be able to keep up with the field in St. Catharines.

The playoff tournament will be held from Oct. 15-17 at Brock University.
