The Queen’s golf team kicked off their season with a victory last Friday at the Windsor University Invitational. The single-day tournament was played at Sutton Creek Golf Club.
Queen’s was represented by five players, with the top four scores from among them counting towards the tournament total. Standout rookie Patrick Forbes shot a 73, giving him the individual gold medal and Journal Athlete of the Week honours. Forbes had also won the Queen’s golf team qualifier two weeks earlier with scores of 73 and 71.
In addition, Queen’s was commendably represented in Windsor by Mike Brown who shot 76, David Trousdale and Ryan Austin who each shot 77, and Andrew Cooley who shot 83. The team total was 303, giving them an 11-shot win over the next closest teams—Waterloo and McMaster—who both totaled 314.
The next day, Sept. 24, the team hit the sweet spot with another victory, winning the first part of the annual Bert Kea Cup. This competition involves two separate single-day tournaments between Queen’s and nearby rival St. Lawrence College. The tournament was played at the Green Acres golf course in Gananoque, where due to the generosity of the owning Greene family, the team also practices free of charge.
The Queen’s team shot a total of 301, giving them a 15-shot lead over St. Lawrence heading into the second round next month. Richard Colton was the individual leader with a round of 72. Not far behind were David Trousdale with 75, Patrick Forbes with 76, and Mike Brown with 78.
The team is looking to continue its winning ways as the weather gets colder in the lead up to the OUA championships, Oct. 17 to 19 at Western.
Assistant Coach and former golf team member Scott Lynn said he is optimistic about the team’s chances.
“Things are definitely looking good as we attempt to win our first OUA championship since my second undergraduate year [in 1997-98],” Lynn said.
