The Queen’s community is encouraged to combat hunger this Ramadan.
The Give 30 campaign is addressing hunger this Ramadan by encouraging Kingston community members to support food banks during the sacred month for Muslim people spanning March 11 to April 9. The Give 30 campaign supports 17 major food banks and anti-poverty organizations across various Canadian cities.
Last year, the Kingston community raised $25,000 through the campaign. This year Mona Rahman, ArtSci ’93 and PhD ’01, co-chair of Give 30 in Kingston, hopes to sustain this momentum as the campaign enters its 11th year of operation.
Kingston became a part of the Give 30 campaign in 2014 and has since raised money for Partners in Mission Food Bank each year.
According to Give 30 campaign’s website, Ramadan’s focus on food, hunger, compassion, social solidarity and sharing makes it the perfect time to fight hunger and poverty. The Give 30 campaign is open to any Kingston community member wanting to take part in the spirit of compassion and giving.
“Hunger is present right here in the Kingston community and those fleeing international crisis, who are especially susceptible to empty food pantries, need support,” Rahman said in a press release.
The cost-of-living crisis in Canada means it’s more important than ever for the Kingston community to help support families facing hunger, Michael Taylor, co-chair of Give Kingston 30, emphasized in the press release.
Give 30 in Kingston is inviting all Queen’s and Kingston community members to join the campaign by hosting food drives or fundraisers. The Give 30 campaign launches on March 4 and will run until June 10.
