It’s not often that small talk before class turns into a festive arts showcase, but for some education students, that’s exactly what happened.
Kate Dickson, ArtSci ’07, was sitting with some friends in a classroom, waiting for their music course to begin and talking about the beautiful weather that stretched from the summer into September.
They decided to do something to celebrate the last warm days of summer so they’re hosting the University’s first Bohemian Arts Festival.
Described by Dickson as a sort of “outdoor coffeehouse,” the festival will be held in the courtyard behind MacArthur Hall on West Campus. It features a variety of visual art, music and drama—from acoustic folk musicians to highland dancing to short drama productions Dickson said the festival’s name is meant to set the mood for the event.
“We called it ‘bohemian’ because anyone can dress how they like, come as they like,” she said.
As well as enjoying the performances, festival attendees can get involved in the artistic process themselves. There will be paint and newsprint available for creative responses to the festival.
And in true fall fair tradition, the organizers of the Bohemian Arts Festival will provide baked goods and hot apple cider.
