Brown overreacts about ‘non-event,’ party theme ‘not the issue’
Dear Editors,
Re: “Offensive themed parties ‘othering’” (Journal, Sept. 28, 2007)
Jeff Brown should be ashamed of himself. In his editorial, Brown speaks about how a recent Cowboy and Indians-themed kegger epitomizes the “otherness” created at Queen’s.
The appropriateness of the party theme is not the issue, however. The AMS has no right or responsibility to interfere in the events of students that are held off campus.
Moreover, the kegger was cancelled at the request of the organizers of the powwow, and apologies were issued by the party planners to all those offended.
Given the hosts’ extremely prompt and polite suspension of the party after illegitimate persecution, it is in extremely poor taste that Brown would use the non-event as an excuse for his tirades.
The Journal must take some blame too—it is not unreasonable to hope that it should serve as a source of news, rather than merely a soap box for the AMS.
