The women’s rugby team shut out the York Lions 31-0 at Kingston Field on Sunday afternoon, but head coach Beth Barz said she wasn’t impressed with the performance against a York team that only won one match last season.
“Sloppy,” she said. “Better than the first game, but we’ve got things to work on. The decision making was better [in this game] and there’s still a way to go.”
Though Queen’s scored five tries, coming from five players, there was plenty of room for improvement. Many of their passes were off the mark and there were numerous avoidable penalties. The Gaels received three yellow cards over the course of the match.
Barz put the mistakes down to game-time nervousness.
“We were overanxious,” she said. “We were well-prepared. Maybe we should be looking at higher accountability at practice so it transfers over to game time. Nothing that can’t be fixed though. … If we play at our full potential, we’ll do well.”
Co-captain Jocelyn Poirer, who was playing at flanker for the first time and also picked up her first yellow card, said the team had to improve its defence.
“We have progressed but we still have things to work on, like making our first tackle,” she said.
Co-captain Shauna Geerts, who provided one try, said there were still lots of improvements to be made, but the team’s overall performance was better than their first match against Trent.
“All in all we’re happy with the result, but we’re not at our full potential,” she said. “The things we had to work on from the Trent game we achieved. We were much more aggressive, we had to be more nasty from last week and we were. They didn’t know what hit them.”
Geerts said the team’s hard tackles were crucial to their victory.
“The key was to hit them low and hard, make them not want to get hit by us again.”
