Shomari Williams
Shomari Williams had three and a half sacks last weekend against one of the toughest offensive lines in Canada. In one season with the Gaels, he’s gained more recognition than most players do in an entire career in the CIS.
The defensive lineman was named Most Valuable Player of the Mitchell Bowl game against the Université Laval Rouge et Or that granted the Gaels a spot in tomorrow’s Vanier Cup. He also garnered CIS defensive player of the week honours.
Williams has been defining force on the Gaels defence during their playoff campaign, totalling 21 tackles in three games. He’s the CIS playoff leader in sacks with 5.5.
Tomorrow’s game marks the end of Williams’s university football career, as he will finish his teaching degree at the end of this academic year. He said he’s looking to make a statement with his play.
“It’s my last college game,” he said. “I’ve got to represent.”
Williams said he isn’t concerned with losing focus on the Vanier Cup while surrounded by the excitement of Quebec City. The education student said he’s been looking forward to this week as an escape from school.
“One big thing that’s not there is school,” he said. “That’s one distraction that’s not there. I think that’ll make for a better week of practice.”
Williams joined the Gaels this season after playing NCAA Div. I football for the University of Houston Cougars. He said he’s assumed a subtle leadership role on the Gaels because of his recent arrival.
“I think I’ve brought a little bit of experience, some intensity, and playmaking ability,” he said. “I try to lead by example. That’s the best way I could do it. I haven’t been around everybody enough to boss them around.”

What would you choose as your last meal?
My last meal? If I was going to die? Jeez. I don’t know. I hope I don’t die.
If you had a free plane ticket, where would you go?
I’d go somewhere that you’ve never heard of. A place on the map that’s not even there, like Turtle Island, Fiji.
With the success of you team, what type of reaction have you gotten?
People you’ve never seen just come up to you and say,” Hey, great game! You’re the best, man!”
