Nancy Ross seeks second term to lead University research

Recommendations will be brought to the Board of Trustees in December

Nancy Ross, vice-principal (research), has expressed interest in continuing in the role beyond her current term, which ended on Aug., 1.

Appointed in 2021, Ross has overseen Queen’s research strategy during her four-year term. Within her role, she’s responsible for ensuring Queen’s produces high-quality research in line with the University’s longer-term goals.

During her tenure, Ross has played a leading role in shaping Queen’s Strategic Research Plan 2025-30. Ross oversees university research units, including Queen’s Partnerships and Innovation, Research Ethics and Compliance, Animal Care Services, and the Centre for Advanced Computing.

To evaluate her candidacy for another term, Principal Patrick Deane has convened a Principal’s Advisory Committee comprised of faculty, administrators, students, and a member of the Board of Trustees. According to the Queen’s Gazette, the committee will spend the fall term collecting feedback from across the University before offering its recommendation to Deane, who will bring his decision forward to the Board for approval in December.

Ross is recognized for her work in interdisciplinary health research. Currently, she holds national leadership positions within both the U15, which supports collaboration among Canada’s research-intensive universities on national research strategy and policy. She’s also a part of the Council of Ontario Universities, a non-partisan organization that advocates for the role of Ontario universities in advancing innovation, student success, and economic development across the province.

Queen’s community members can share input on the Vice-Principal (Research) ortfolio and its direction through an online formopen until Sept. 30. A summary of responses will be provided to the committee for consideration.

A final decision regarding Ross’s reappointment is expected to be made by the Board of Trustees in December.
