Medical students and faculty donate $2M to building
Queen’s medical students and faculty have shown their support for the University’s new school of medicine building by donating over $2 million towards its construction.
The $77 million project is now over 95 per cent funded and is scheduled to open on the corner of Arch and Stuart streets next year.
Karmen Krol, the Aesculapian Society’s (the medical school society) 2009 president, said the said the students were inspired to donate because the faculty had already donated $1.5 million toward the new building.
At the Aesculapian Society’s annual general meeting two weeks ago, the society presented Health Sciences Dean David Walker with a $10,500 cheque and another to represent the $500,000 the society will be collecting over several years through an optional $100 annual fee.
“This magnificent level of support from our medical students is symbolic of this very special place,” Walker said on Jan 20. “I was quite overwhelmed.”
Other sources of funding include private donations and $28.8 million provided by each of the federal and provincial governments.

Art project to fight violence against women
The Picture an End to Violence committee is creating an art instillation of back-and-white portraits of men who oppose violence against women.
The project aims to challenge the stereotype of male aggression and dominance. The committee hopes to show a commitment to ending male violence against women by displaying the oversized photographs. The project began at Queen’s last year, but is expanding to include all of Kingston this year. Last year the Picture an End to Violence committee only had two members. This year they have grown to 13 and are hoping to double their number of portraits to 60.
The exhibit will feature Queen’s University men’s hockey coach Brett Gibson, Liberal MPP John Gerretsen, Queen’s students and Kingston activists.
The exhibit will be on display at Wallace Hall in the JDUC beginning Thursday, Feb. 11.
