The Beer Store is took the unprecedented step of banning the sale of kegs this weekend to anyone who doesn’t operate a licensed establishment or have a permit. The ban was intended to minimize the number of illegal student keggers over Homecoming weekend.
Sara Taylor, Communications Manager for the Beer Store, said the decision came as the result of a letter sent to the Beer Store by the Kingston Police.
“It was asked of us if we would be able to eliminate the sale of kegs to individuals.”
Taylor said the request was not compulsory.
The ban came into effect on Thursday and will continue until closing Sunday. It affects only one retail location, the Beer Store at Bagot Street and Cataraqui Road, as this is the only Kingston location that sells kegs.
Taylor said to her knowledge, the sale of kegs had never been prohibited anywhere in Ontario until now.
Kimberley Hord, ArtSci ’09, bought three kegs from the Beer Store on Wednesday afternoon with her housemates. She said she had no trouble purchasing that quantity of alcohol.
“No questions asked; they even helped us put them in our cars.”
Hord said she thought the keg ban was a good idea.
“I think it’s kind of necessary because parties get out of hand.”
