JComm to implement educational sanctions

Students who commit offences with discriminatory or racist overtones could face educational sanctions in addition to sanctions already in place.

Last week, AMS Assembly passed a motion adding to its constitution that students could be required to produce essays, posters, presentations and reflective papers as a penalty for breaching the code of conduct.

The motion stated that, in some cases, there needs to be an educational element to the sanctioning so that the respondent understands the ramifications of their discriminatory and damaging words.

At the same meeting, Assembly also passed a motion raising the maximum amount for bonds or fines to $1,000 from $500.

The quality of the essays will be monitored by a clerk, who currently reads letters of apology. If an essay isn’t approved, the student will be sent back to JComm.

JComm Chief Prosecutor Jenn Mansell said whether educational sanctions will be used will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Search for vice-principal (advancement) continues

The University began looking for new vice-principal (advancement) when George Hood retired on Dec. 31, 2006.

The hiring process began in March, when the specific requirements for the position were made public in an advertisement published in newspapers such as the Globe and Mail.

The position makes $279,147.14.

Rod Morrison, vice-principal (human resources), said the University will pay whatever the competitive wage is for the job.

“It’s a market-driven rate,” he said.

Morrison said the University has enlisted a search firm to prepare a list of candidates to review. A search committee from the University will review and shorten the list.

“We hope to make a selection early in the summer with placements with the person starting in September,” he said.

Hood held the position for eight years, during which time he was responsible for raising $262 million.
