Queen’s grad a Rhodes scholar
On Saturday, Nov. 18, Michael Urban, ArtSci ’06, became the 54th Queen’s graduate to be awarded
the Rhodes Scholarship.
“It hasn’t really sunk in yet,” he told the Journal. “The scholarship doesn’t change the fact that I have
two essays and two exams within the next two weeks to do.”
Urban graduated from Queen’s with honours degrees in political studies and history. He was active
on campus and within the Kingston community, culminating with his role as speaker for AMS assembly
last year.
Urban is currently pursuing a master’s degree in international affairs at Carleton University, and
said he plans to continue studying international affairs at Oxford. “Eventually I’d like to work in
the field of international affairs or relations,” he said. The scholarship is distributed through the Oxford-based Rhodes Trust and grant recipients the opportunity to study at Oxford University for two to three years.
This year’s winners will begin their studies in October 2007.

Exam stressbusters to be distributed
Marija Linjacki has a present for students that she hopes will provide a solution for exam-time stress.
Drawing from her own experiences as an undergraduate student, Linjaki, the University’s community outreach co-ordinator, has organized exam packages containing items that she feels will help students cope with exam-time stress. “I thought of what would’ve helped me when I was a student,” she said.
These items include a coupon for a free coffee at the Common Ground, a teabag, earplugs, a coupon for a free movie rental, easy recipes and a guide to study locations both on and off campus.
“It is about providing comfort items, information and tools to the students during exams,” Linjacki said.
Stuart Cooper, also ArtSci ’10, said he doesn’t feel the packages would be useful for him, however.
“There is nothing offered that is really appealing,” he said. Linjacki is distributing the packages to students in Queen’s-owned houses in the Ghetto, and they will also be available upon request while supplies last. There are about 250 packages available.
