Security Alert
The Kingston HIV/AIDS Regional Services office received a threatening phone call last week. The anonymous male who phoned threatened to go to local parks with others and assault gay men, engaging he what he termed “gay bashing”. Due to the close proximity of several parks to Campus, Queen’s Security has issued a security alert.
Awakenings MD receives degree
Dr. Oliver Sacks, the doctor who inspired the Robin Williams’ movie Awakenings will be granted honourary degrees at Queen’s Spring 2001 convocation ceremonies. Dr. Sacks, a highly regarded neurologist, is a director at the World Health Organization. He is also well known for his best-selling collection of case histories of unusual neurological experiences, The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat.
Computers performing surgery?
Queen’s has placed itself at the forefront of medical computing technology. Researchers at Queen’s and Kingston General Hospital (KGH) will develop the software for use in the first fully computerized operating room of its kind in the world, set to open at KGH this fall.
The Department of Computing Science at Queen’s has also submitted a proposal to Queen’s Senate to approve a specialized undergraduate program in bio medical computing.
Goodes News
Hundreds of graduating students and their families joined local dignitaries Thursday to celebrate the naming of the new home of the School of Business. Goodes Hall, on the site of the former Victoria School at Union and Frontenac streets. Alumnus Mel Goodes, the building´s lead donor and former Warner-Lambert chief, has named the school in honour of his father.
