Dr. Mark Walters, former F.R. Scott Chair in Public and Constitutional Law at McGill University, took office as Queen’s new Dean of the Faculty of Law on July 1.
Walters replaces Bill Flanagan, who announced last September he wouldn’t seek another term as dean.
Contracted for a five-year term, Walters is no stranger to Queen’s, having earned his law degree at the university in 1989 and serving as a faculty member from 1999-2016.
During his time at Queen’s, Walters led the launch of the University’s doctoral law program and wrote a history of the law faculty for its 50th anniversary.
With experience practicing Aboriginal title law and treaty rights, Walters is a leading scholar on the rights of Indigenous peoples with specific interest in relations between the crown and Indigenous nations.
Walters has taught at Oxford University and has been the recipient of the Canadian Association of Law Teachers’ Award for Academic Excellence and the Queen’s Award for Excellence in Graduate Supervision.
