Business Dean Announced
Wim A. Van der Stede will be crossing the pond from the London School of Economics, where he served as the dean of extended education and a professor of accounting and financial management, to become the next dean of the Smith School of Business.
His appointment was announced in the Queen’s Gazette on Dec. 3, with his five-year term beginning on July 1.
“I’m greatly honoured by the opportunity to lead Queen’s Smith School of Business into its next chapter,” Van der Stede said in the Gazette. “With its distinctive strengths in education and research, and its strong sense of innovation, purpose, and impact, Smith Business has many assets, and I look forward to working with the entire Queen’s community to build on them, particularly at a time when business education and research must deeply connect to society’s biggest challenges.”
During the search for a permanent dean, Lynnette Purda has been serving as interim dean but is set to return to her role as a Professor in June.
Special Advisor on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Appointed

As Head of the department and a Professor of Global Development Studies, Taylor succeeds Heather Aldersey, who served in the role for the past two and a half years. In the article, Taylor wrote that “With only four years to the culmination of the SDGs period, it’s vital that Queen’s mobilize its existing framework to catalyze further impact.”
The appointment marks the fourth new advisor since June, with Brenda Brouwers appointed as the Special Advisor on Academic Accommodations, Michelle Searle appointed to the role of Community Engagement Advisor, and Eleftherios Solea appointed as the first-ever AI Advisor.
Vice-Principal (Research) Appointed
Nancy Ross, ArtSci ’90, MA ’92, has been reappointed as Vice-Principal (Research) for a consecutive five-year term.
She first assumed the role in August of 2021, and plans to serve her full five years before stepping into her second term on Aug. 1. In the Gazette article on her announcement, it was explained that Ross will be focusing on recruiting “top research talent.”
“I’m deeply honoured to continue serving the Queen’s community in this role,” Ross said in the Gazette. “Over the past several years, we’ve built strong momentum in our research mission, and I’m excited to work with colleagues across the university to advance our shared goals. Queen’s researchers are undertaking extraordinary work, and I look forward to supporting their success and impact in every way that I can.”
