MCRC president-elect Michael Paramathasan, ArtSci ’11, finds his team’s victory hard to
believe—perhaps because they were almost tricked into accepting defeat.
“The people who came in had this great poker face on so we got the idea that we lost,” he said. “We looked at each other, just bracing for it … then they were like, “you won!”
Team Paramathasan-MacLeod-Cha took 55 per cent of the 1,240 votes cast by students living
in residence.
Although excited by their accomplishment, Paramathasan said his team’s first priority is achieving their goals.
“We don’t have time [to celebrate],” he said. “We’re starting tomorrow. We only have a year to accomplish a lot.”
Incoming Vice-President (Residence Affairs) Brittaney MacLeod, ArtSci ’10, attributed her team’s victory to approachability.
“I think, bluntly, we were more personable. We were able to communicate and connect with people better,” she said. “Our platform was about talking to people—getting to know their needs and what makes residence life important to them.”
Incoming Vice-President (Discipline) Jessica Cha, ArtSci ’10, said she thinks her team won and will succeed because of their strong preparation.
“We did a lot of research before preparing our platform,” Cha said. “We didn’t promise anything we couldn’t accomplish.”
Tina Yan, presidential candidate for team TAP, said her team is disappointed with the loss but did the best job they could.
“In a way, I’m relieved. … We all worked very hard and we all did a lot of promoting in classrooms. We probably should have promoted more in Victoria Hall.”
Yan, currently president of Waldron Tower, said hopes PMC will follow through on their
campaign promises.
“I hope they keep the MCRC organization running smoothly.”
