Downtown businesses are urging customers to remember they’ll still be open, even while phase three of construction on Princess St. — unofficially called “Big Dig 3” — continues through the winter months.

The $12.9-million project, which began on Tuesday, aims to replace old underground infrastructure to support future development of new high-rise buildings in downtown Kingston.

With the first phase spanning from Ontario St. to King St. and phase two from King St. to Bagot St., the third phase will span the area between Sydenham and Montreal Streets.

Princess St. will be closed to vehicular access from Bagot St. to Montreal St. until April 29 and Montreal St. to Sydenham St. until May 30. Despite the construction, there will still pedestrian access to local businesses along the street.

The surrounding streets will also be under construction. The Montreal St. intersection is scheduled to close between Feb. 22 to April 29, and a segment of Princess St. between Sydenham St. and Clergy St. will be closed from May 2 to June 24.

The majority of work on Princess St. is scheduled for completion by July 1, 2016, with work on some side streets continuing until December 2016.
