After a name change

Before the pandemic, avid intramural players, faculty rivals, and spirited student-athletes anticipated the winter semester. With cold winds came BEWIC Sports Days.

This year, with restrictions lifted, BEWIC is back under a different name: Q Sportsfest. The ARC will welcome teams of 30 students on Feb. 4 to compete in a series of challenging and creative sports events.

In an interview with The Journal, Vicrum Kailey—the Athletics and Recreation (A&R) coordinator of leagues and tournaments—explained the name change.

“The last time BEWIC Sports ran was 2020 and I think since then we’ve had so much change in the world and within the Queen’s community,” he said.

“We’re doing a little bit of a rebranding […] just creating a new face for the event was my goal and I wanted to just create something that was catchy and create some more hype.”

The innovation doesn’t stop with the name.

Q Sportsfest will be a jam-packed day to remember, running from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and requiring teams to compete in a various games organized in a tournament style.

The first and most confusing competition is dubbed “rugby-basketball.” In this event, teams compete on a regular basketball court with regular basketball rules with two exceptions: a shorter net and a rugby ball.

Next up is dodgeball—or what should be called dodgeball on steroids. To engage as many players as possible and keep things chaotic in true Sportsfest fashion, dodgeball games will be 30 on 30 and with an increased number of balls.

The last event is barely a sport, yet it requires the most competitive and spirited players. To round out the craziness, athletes will build their own boats using only cardboard and duct tape before boarding the boats and testing them out in the ARC pool.

Kailey is especially excited about this event and its potential to engage all types of student-athletes.

“It’s all about having fun. We want to be able to award people for their competitiveness and overall spirit, sportsmanship, and just having that overall comradery of bringing students together,” he said. “That’s the goal of this event: just to bring as many students as possible together and have it in a fun setting.”

Players are asked to register ahead of time on imleagues.com so they can form teams, pay the participation fees, and get a basic understanding of the event.

Team registration costs $350, but there is also an option for solo athletes to register for about $17 each. This registration fee includes a t-shirt for each participant and a catered Osmows meal at the end of the day.

Kailey is hopeful this event will help create buzz around athletics at Queen’s.

“I think doing something like this is much needed for the community,” he said. “I want this event to be a staple for people to be excited about for years to come.”
