After a flood postponed the Queen’s Centre’s September opening, the building is on track to open Dec. 1, acting Vice-Principal (Operations and Finance) Bill Bryck said.
“We’re moving at a good pace,” he said, adding that most of the damage caused by the severe rainstorm on Aug. 11 has been fixed.
The University had to order a new gym floor and electrical equipment, he said. Electrical damage affected the space occupied by the Common Ground coffeehouse, the pool, the food court and club space.
“We’re not 100 per cent sure of how everything will work out,” he said. “However, we have stored water into the new pool and the main gym floor has been replaced.”
The gym floor is being sanded right now, he added.
Phase I includes a centre with three gyms, a bigger Common Ground coffeehouse, a food court, a fireside lounge and club space and a new School of Kinesiology.
The $169-million budget is still on track, Bryck said.
The final figure for Phase I won’t be ready until the School of Kinesiology is finished in early 2010, he said.
AMS Vice-President (Operations) Leslie Yun said the AMS is preparing to move the Common Ground and club space to the new centre.
The AMS office will remain in the JDUC, she said.
“A few of our representatives have been promoting and generating buzz for the upcoming opening, such as the marketing promotions from the Common Ground,” she said. “The Common Ground in the new centre is absolutely beautiful. … I saw it a couple weeks ago.”
The AMS signed a memorandum of understanding with the University in December 2005, pledging $25.5 million in student fees towards the Queen’s Centre.
This year’s fee is $71. It will rise to $141 in 2010-11.
“The schedule for that has been laid in our agreement and our schedule hasn’t changed,” Yun said.
“We’re not anticipating any changes for the move all around,” she said. “We want to move in as soon as possible.”
