The Gaels Baseball club team is off to a hot start for 2025, coming out of the long weekend with a series of wins in Toronto.
The Gaels travelled down to the University of Toronto’s Dan Lang Field, facing off against Toronto, Brock University, and Wilfred Laurier University in Toronto’s annual Varsity Blues Labour Day Classic. The Varsity Blues host the event yearly, and the exhibition games took place from Aug. 30 to 31.
Queen’s opened their tournament with a big win against Laurier on day one, finishing with a score of 8-1. Later that day, they fell to Brock by a score of 6-2.
On the second day, the Gaels won a tight morning matchup against the hosts in Toronto, getting the edge by a score of 3-2. Their 2-1 record and superior run differential earned the Gaels a ticket to the finals later that day, where they would rematch against the Toronto Varsity Blues.
After the tight game one in the morning, the Gaels made no mistake in their rematch versus Toronto. They had 12 hits in five innings, crushing Toronto, earning a decisive 9-2 victory to win the competition.
The tournament was an exhibition event for all teams involved, but it should give the Gaels plenty of confidence heading into their regular season. They’re coming off a fourth-place finish at the OUA Championship last year, and are just three years removed from the first OUA Championship in the program’s history.
Gaels can catch the baseball team at Megaffin Park this year, with their brief season running from September to October.
