On the evenings of March 26 and 27, Queen’s Athletics and Recreation hosted their annual Colour Awards for both Varsity Clubs and the Varsity Teams.
Varsity Clubs
The Alfie Pierce Trophy recognizes Rookie of the Year.
The Women’s Alfie Pierce Trophy nominees were Women’s Lacrosse player Kiara McKelvey, Sci ’27, the Queen’s Sailing Club’s Ellie Pirie, ArtSci ’27, and the Women’s Squash Club’s Gabby Waite, Sci ’27.
Playing the Attack/Middle position, McKelvey received the 2023-24 award.
The Men’s Alfie Pierce Trophy nominees were Men’s Baseball player Clarke Needles, Sci ’27, Sailing athlete Christopher Tang, Sci ’27, and Men’s Ultimate player Kai Huang, ArtSci ’27.
Huang received the 2023-24 award.
The Marion Ross Trophy acknowledges the Women’s Varsity Club Athlete of the Year. This year’s nominees were Artistic Swimmer Claire Christie, ArtSci ’24, Women’s Field Hockey player Nina Watson, ArtSci ’24, Women’s Lacrosse player Abby Lee, ArtSci ’24, Women’s Squash player Maddie O’Connor, Med ’24, and Triathlon athlete Emily MacGowan, ConEd ’24.
O’Connor received this award for 2023-24.
The Jack Jarvis Trophy acknowledges the Men’s Varsity Club Athlete of the Year. This year’s nominees were Men’s Baseball player Jordan Leishman, Comm ’26, and Triathlon athlete James Griffin, Sci ’24.
Griffin was the 2023-24 recipient of this award.
The recipients for the 2023-24 Varsity Club Student-Athlete Leadership Award were Ally Westbroek, HealthSci ’24, and Aidan Westdal, Sci ’24, for their work with the Nordic Skiing club as they faced organizational and leadership obstacles.
Taking home the Award of Merit for Varsity Club of the Year was the Men’s Ultimate team. These Gaels came first in Canada at the Canadian University Ultimate Championship.
Varsity Teams
As with the Varsity Clubs, the Alfie Pierce Trophy acknowledges the Rookie of the Year in both Men’s and Women’s divisions.
This year’s nominees for the Women’s Varsity Team Rookie of the Year were Women’s Basketball player Katrina Renon, Women’s Hockey player Mikayla Cranney, ArtSci ’27, and Women’s Soccer player Leda Naihin.
With eight goals, three assists, and 19 points in 12 games, Naihin received the 2023-24 award for Women’s Rookie of the Year.
This year’s nominees for the Men’s Varsity Team Rookie of the Year were Cross Country runner Angus Skinner, ConEd ’28, and Men’s Football player Brady Hennigar, ConEd ’28.
Playing 10 games with the Gaels, Hennigar received the 2023-24 Men’s Rookie of the Year award.
The nominees for Varsity Teams Outstanding Performance of the Year were Women’s Basketball player Julia Chadwick, MIR ’24, Cross Country’s Skinner, Men’s Football player Jared Chisari, MSc ’25, and Men’s Hockey player Jonathan Yantsis, ArtSci ’24.
Breaking multiple records, including single-season rushing yards—with 1178—and making five touchdowns in a single game on Sept. 30, Chisari received the 2023-24 Outstanding Performance of the Year award.
The nominees for the PHE ’55 Alumnae Award for Women’s Varsity Team Athlete of the Year were Women’s basketball’s Chadwick, Women’s Hockey player Scott Watkins Southward, ArtSci ’24, Women’s Rugby player Carmen Izyk, Nurs ’24, and Women’s Volleyball player Hannah Duchesneau, ArtSci ’24.
Reaching point 1,000 and breaking the Queen’s single-game point record on Jan. 13 with 43 points, Chadwick received the 2023-24 PHE ’55 Alumnae Award.
The Jenkins Trophy recognizes the Men’s Varsity Team Athlete of the Year. This year’s nominees were Men’s Basketball player Luka Syllas, ConEd ’24, Men’s Football player Evan Floren, ArtSci ’24, Men’s Hockey player Jacob Paquette, ArtSci ’24, Men’s Soccer player Matt Ciavarro, and Men’s Volleyball player Erik Siksna, Comm ’24.
After being third in the OUA regular season for hitting percentage with a 0.339 and first in the OUA regular season for service aces per set with 0.84, Siksna received the 2023-24 Jenkins Trophy.
With an OUA Wilson Cup Championship, the Queen’s Men’s Basketball team had a phenomenal season. The finished second in the U SPORTS National Championships and had a 19-3 season record.
They were awarded the 2023-24 Jim Tait Trophy for Varsity Team of the Year.
Support Service Awards
Payton Bottomley was the 2023-24 recipient of the Han Dunlop Shield (Sports Medicine) award. Izzy Shih was the 2023-24 recipient of the Strength & Conditioning Intern of the Year award. Jocelyn Danby, Kin ’23, was the 2023-24 recipient of the Academic Support Award.
