
Before 1997, Robert Sutherland, was just another name on campus.
It was only after multiple pushes by students and alumni that Queen’s recognized Sutherland — Canada’s first Black university graduate and Queen’s saviour — and dedicated a room in the JDUC to him in 1997 and a building in 2009.
Behind both efforts was Greg Frankson, Queen’s first Black AMS president.
