Queen’s introduces online portal to manage student accommodations

Ventus to be rolled out in April

New system to improve accessibility.

Ventus Accommodations Management for Students is the product of two years of development and research aiming to provide a streamlined experience for both Queen’s students and faculty.

“Ventus will improve the student experience, as it is a cross-campus interface that modernizes processes for academic accommodations and is more user-friendly than the current system,” Klodiana Kolomitro, Associate Vice-Principal (Teaching and Learning), said in an email sent to The Journal.

The submission of letters of accommodation to professors, for example, will be automated.

“[Ventus] administratively integrates the systems, offices and individuals involved in supporting students with their accommodations—QSAS [Queen’s Student Accessibility Services], instructors, and the Exams Office in the Office of the University Registrar.”

The streamlining of the process will also allow students to be flexible in their approach, compiling their accommodations to each course on one platform.

“The Ventus Project Management Team is a partnership between SWS [Student Wellness Services], the Office of the Associate Vice-Principal (Teaching and Learning), ITS, and the Exams Office, and includes faculty, staff, and student representatives from across the university.”

Currently, in phase three of its project timeline, Ventus is undergoing testing and early usage to smooth out technological disruptions. The Ventus team anticipates a full roll-out of the program in April of this year.

Both faculty input and student consultations have been involved in the production of the service.

“We are confident Ventus will help improve accommodations processes at Queen’s,” Kolomitro said.
