For three days in May at the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan, the new Queen’s Formula SAE race car left 97 other teams in their dust.
And they they weren’t on the track.
The Queen’s race car team placed 26th out of 123 in the competition. Their finish in the international competition was their best finish ever, and the team was judged on design, performance on the track as well as its ability to manufacture an automobile.
The car, which reaches speeds up to 140km/hour is completely designed, built and driven by student volunteers.
The team has been competing since 1994 and relies on funding from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Sci ’40 Alumni Association, and corporate sponsorship.
This month the team went to the Molson Indy to attract additional corporate sponsorship by displaying their car. Ford, GM and Chrysler often recruit at events like the Molson Indy and the race at the Silverdome.
