The Queen’s University community remembers, reflects on, and mourns the loss of Jacob Downey, ArtSci ’25. Downey passed away on Sept. 29. He was 18 years old at the time of his passing.
Downey wished to pursue a career in sports medicine and came to Queen’s to study at the School of Kinesiology.
He is survived by his parents, Peter and Laurie, his brother Greg, as well as his extended family and friends.
Originally from Lindsay, Ontario, Downey is remembered as an excellent student, and athlete. Before arriving at Queen’s, he was one of the recipients of the Peterborough Petes Education Fund Minor Hockey Scholarship Program.
“He was a brilliant kid on and off the ice, and in every sport he played. He excelled not only in hockey but field lacrosse, box lacrosse and he played a lot of rugby, too. Off the playing field, he was an extremely motivated and smart kid in all walks of life and school,” Scott Roche, Downey’s Hockey coach of six seasons, said in an interview with The Peterborough Examiner.
Downey will be deeply missed by the community, having formed friendships with students across campus, particularly the residents of Jean Royce Hall.
