Employees will receive an email with the survey on Jan. 14.

On Jan. 14, Queen’s employees will open their inbox to an email from Principal Patrick Deane, requesting feedback on their experience at the University.

Announced in the Gazette on Jan. 12, Queen’s is inviting its employees to partake in a 10-minute Employee Experiences Survey. The survey is meant to measure “employee perspectives on various aspects of our organizational culture so that future employee initiatives are evidence-based and can more effectively address employees’ needs,” according to the survey website. The survey will open on Jan. 14 and close on Feb. 4, with Metrics@Work administrating the survey.

The survey was last conducted in May 2022, with the results released publicly through the Employee Experiences Survey Report 2022-23 in December 2023. Over 3,800 employees participated in the 2022-23 survey, representing 76 per cent of staff and 52 per cent of faculty at the time of the survey.

Following the report, the University identified three areas for improvement: recognizing employees, supporting mental health, and providing professional development opportunities. The results showed 79 per cent of employees reporting feeling physically safe on campus; however, those who identified as an equity deserving group saw lower rates, with only 33 per cent of female-identifying employees with disabilities having responded that they felt physically safe on campus.

Additionally, 27 per cent of employees claimed they’d experienced harassment, discrimination, or reprisal at Queen’s, but 49 per cent chose not to report it.

The Gazette wrote that this year’s survey will “examine engagement outcomes and workplace drivers such as communication and role clarity, progress in institutional priority areas observed since 2022, and demographic insights.”

“This year’s survey has been updated to include a more focused set of questions with a shorter completion time, making it easier for employees to share their perspectives,” Associate Vice-Principal (Human Resources) Lisa Walsh said in the Gazette.

While responses are confidential, comprehensive findings of this year’s survey are set to be released publicly sometime “later in 2026.”
