As controversy takes hold of American campuses following the resignation of Ivy League University Presidents, US congress’ investigation into antisemitism on campus continues. Canadian universities are grappling with a similar call out.

In an open letter directed to 25 Canadian universities, including Queen’s, Liberal Member of Parliament Anthony Housefather questioned how universities are protecting Jewish students on campus. Housefather questioned whether, “the call for genocide and the elimination of the State of Israel” goes against universities’ codes of conduct.

In a statement to The Journal, Queen’s denounced all forms of hate, including antisemitism and Islamophobia, and reaffirmed that the safety of the Queen’s community is taken very seriously.

“We are committed to ensuring all members of our community are safe, treated with respect, and can thrive on campus. We will be responding to the letter from the Members of Parliament in the coming days,” the statement read.

Housefather’s Jan. 20 deadline is on Sunday. He intends to present responses to a House of Commons committee. Hillel Ontario expressed gratitude in a statement of support of the MP’s letter. The statement said Jewish students on university campuses are feeling unsafe and vulnerable, and are in need of support now more than ever.
