Varsity sports are now back to continue their seasons in the new year. Before jumping ahead to the second half of the season, let’s take a step back and look at what last season brought the Gaels.
Men’s Basketball
At the end of the 2023 Fall term, the Gaels Men’s Basketball team was ranked third in Canada, according to U SPORTS. The Gaels are just behind University of Victoria and the first-place uOttawa Gee-Gees, whom the Gaels beat 96-95 on Jan. 5.
The Gaels had a 7-2 conference record, with big wins like a 91-39 victory against the Laurentian Voyageurs on Nov. 3, and their triple-digit game win of 100-67 against the Algoma Thunderbirds.
Following two games this past weekend, Guard Luka Syllas, ConEd ’24, leads the Gaels with 167 points in 11 games. He is ranked 20th for points in the OUA.
Connor Kelly, ArtSci ’24, leads the OUA in the 3-point percentage category with a 59.0.
The Gaels have 207 points for and 228 points against this season.
If you’re looking to catch the Queen’s Men’s Basketball team during their next home games, fans can watch the Gaels take on the McMaster Marauders on Jan. 12 or the York Lions on Jan. 13.
Women’s Basketball
The Queen’s Women’s Basketball team finished 2023 with a season record of 8-1, slightly ahead of the Queen’s Men’s team.
The women’s team ranked fourth in the U SPORTS Elo rankings as of Dec. 5. They were behind University of Alberta, University of Saskatchewan, and the division leaders, the Carleton Ravens.
As of now, Julia Chadwick, ArtSci ’24, leads the Gaels for points with 163. This places her 14th amongst OUA players.
The Gaels are first in the OUA for both 3-points made per game and attempted per game.
Fans can see Queen’s Women’s Basketball back in action at home against the McMaster Marauders on Jan. 12 or the York Lions on Jan. 13.
Men’s Hockey
Unranked in the U SPORTS Elo rankings, the Queen’s Men’s hockey team can turn their game around in the second portion of their season.
With a record of 11-7-0 going into winter break, the Gaels had 10 games remaining in the 2024 portion of the 2023-24 regular season.
Despite these statistics, many Queen’s players are in leading positions within the OUA rankings.
Dalton Duhart, ArtSci ’26, is first for points in the OUA with 35 total points, comprising 13 goals and 22 assists.
Nolan Hutcheson, ArtSci ’25, finds himself among the offensive leaders as he sits in fifth for points with 26. Hutcheson is tied third for goals with Duhart, with 13 goals for each player.
Goaltender Christian Purboo, ArtSci ’25, is second in the OUA for Goals-Against Average (GAA) with a 2.07 and is also second for a save percentage of 0.931.
The Gaels have had 76 goals for and 57 goals against.
Their next home game takes place on Jan. 13 against the Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins, where the Gaels could breakfree of their four-game losing streak.
Women’s Hockey
The Queen’s Women’s Hockey team was also unranked by U SPORTS heading into the winter break, where they had an 8-7-0 record.
Rookie Mikayla Cranney leads the Gaels for points with 11 points in 17 games, placing her 14th in the OUA.
Goaltender Emma Tennant, Sci ’25, has a 2.35 GAA, putting her in eighth place in the OUA.
The Gaels have 44 goals for and 43 goals against so far this season.
