Women’s volleyball falls to Lions
The women’s volleyball team couldn’t stop the York Lions’ winning streak last Friday and instead extended the streak to 14 games with a 3-1 loss. The Gaels began well, winning the first set 28-26, but they lost the following three sets 25-21, 25-23 and 25-18.
Second-year outside hitter Lorna Button said the Gaels didn’t let York’s first-place status intimidate them.
“We went with the same intensity as any other team we play,” she said. “[Last-place] RMC or York, it doesn’t matter.”
The loss drops the Gaels’ record to 8-7 on the season and knocked them out of third place in the OUA East. The University of Toronto Varsity Blues started the weekend 7-7, but beat the 2-15 Lakehead Thunderwolves twice to leapfrog Queen’s. Second-year outside hitter Katie Matthews said the game against York wasn’t all negative. She said the first-set victory and close scores in the following sets proved that the Gaels can compete with the strongest in the OUA.
The Gaels’ next game is against the 1-14 University of Windsor Lancers in Windsor on Friday. They then play the 13-2 Western Mustangs in London Saturday night.
Matthews said the team will take the same attitude from the York match into both games.
“It’s important to not take any team for granted and not put any team on a pedestal.”
