Perfect start for women’s lacrosse
The women’s lacrosse team kick-started their regular season with a bang this weekend in Montreal.
They began the weekend with a 14-4 victory over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday. On Sunday they pulled off a 11-7 win over the McMaster Marauders and eked out a 9-7 triumph over the McGill Martlets.
The three wins catapulted Queen’s to the top of the OUA standings, two points ahead of the 2-0 Laurier Golden Hawks.
First-year player Jackie Byers led the Gaels offensively, scoring nine goals and adding two assists. She was named the OUA Female Athlete of the Week and football’s Dee Sterling was named the male athlete of the week, giving Queen’s the first sweep of the OUA weekly awards since Guelph accomplished the feat in November 2007.
The Gaels’ next games will be Sept. 27 against the the Varsity Blues and the Golden Hawks.

Baseball earns first wins of season
The baseball team picked up their first wins of the season this weekend with victories over the York Lions and the Durham Lords. Queen’s lost their opening game against York 6-4 Saturday, but rebounded in the second game of the double-header to claim a
6-0 victory.
On Sunday, the Gaels started off strong with an 11-3 victory over the Durham Lords, but they lost 11-1 to the Lords in their second game. Stephan Nagy has accumulated five hits, six walks and a .357 batting average so far for the Gaels, while Graham Fulton has six hits, five RBIs and a .333 batting average. Queen’s will play four home games at Megaffin Park this coming weekend, taking on the St. Clair Saints at 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday and facing the Lions at 1 and 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Men’s lacrosse beats U of T
The men’s lacrosse team beat the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 12-11 on Sunday, but lost a 9-8 heartbreaker to McGill Saturday when the Redmen scored the winning goal with 12 seconds left.
Matt Denis led the Gaels offensively, scoring three goals against McGill and adding five goals and an assist against the Blues. Nathan Leader contributed three goals and six assists in the two games, while Torey Kohara chipped in three goals and three assists and Strat Allen shone defensively for the Gaels.
Next weekend, the team will play the Carleton Ravens twice in a home-and-home series. The Gaels’ home game will take place Sunday at 1 p.m. at North Field, next to Richardson Stadium.
