Field hockey hires new coach
The women’s field hockey team hired Kingston native Angela Meggs to take the helm for the upcoming season. Following an illustrious high school career where she was named an alternate for Ontario’s U16 team, she went on to play for the University of Western Ontario for four years. At Western, she received an honours degree in Health Sciences. She also obtained a Masters of Teaching from Griffith University in Queensland, Australia. Meggs is pursuing her Level I Coaching certification, and currently teaches grades Seven and Eight in the Limestone District School Board. She replaces Sean Smith, who led Queen’s to a 7-6-1 record last year, fifth-best in OUA competition.
Men’s soccer falls at Old Four Tournament
The annual Old Four Tournament, a pre-season event hosted by the University of Toronto and attended by Queen’s, Western and McGill, ended with the men’s soccer team losing the bronze-medal match 1-0 to Western Sunday to finish last. McGill beat Queen’s 1-0 in their Saturday match and went on to collect the tournament gold medal Sunday with a 2-0 victory over U of T. Before the tournament, Queen’s lost its first exhibition match 4-2 to Laval on August 26. The exhibition matches marked the first action for new Queen’s head coach Carlo Cannovan, who was hired in August to replace Chris Gencarelli. The men open their regular-season campaign this weekend with a match against the Trent Excalibur at 1 p.m. Saturday at Richardson Stadium. They will travel to play the Carleton Ravens on Sunday.
Patrick Forbes to represent Canada at FISU World Golf Championship
Queen’s golfer Patrick Forbes has been named to the 11-member Canadian men’s team going to the International University Sports Federation(Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire) World University Golf Championship in Sun City, South Africa, which runs September 3-5. This is the second time Forbes is representing his country at the FISU Championships.
