Football receives honours
The football team was ousted by Western in their quarterfinal game Oct. 27, but they’re still receiving accolades for their strong regular season.
Twelve Golden Gaels were named to the OUA’s all-star team on Tuesday, the most of any team. Six of the Gaels were first-team selections, including running back Mike Giffin, who was the OUA’s leading rusher with 1,157 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Rob Bagg, the team’s fifth-year receiver who turned down a roster spot with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders to finish his Queen’s career, also gained a first-team spot.
The defensive first-team all-stars were defensive end Osie Ukwuoma, linebacker Thaine Carter and free safety Matt Vickers.
Defensive back Jimmy Allin received two second-team nominations, one on defence and one as a kick returner.
Centre Dan Bederman, Guard Vincenzo DeCivita, and rush/cover D.J. Mulholland also earned nominations.
On Thursday, head coach Pat Sheahan was named the OUA’s Coach of the Year.
Sheahan, who has completed his eighth season at Queen’s and twenty-fourth in the CIS, also won the award in 2001.

Women’s water polo lose close game, men fall 26-5
The women’s water polo team hosted the Carleton Ravens this past weekend. They kept it close throughout the match, but Carleton’s Rachel Baxter scored her fifth goal of the game with less than two minutes to go to give the Ravens a 9-8 victory. Holly Tawse led the Gaels with two goals. The men’s team also played the Ravens, but with much less success. They trailed 9-0 after the first quarter, and eventually lost 26-5. Paul Lindabury scored two goals for Queen’s in a losing effort. Both teams travel to Hamilton this weekend. The men will take on the Western Mustangs and the McMaster Marauders, while the women will play the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
