Women’s cross country team wins at home
The women’s cross country team, ranked sixth in the country, won the Queen’s Invitational Saturday afternoon at Fort Henry. Leslie Sexton led the Gaels to victory by winning the five-kilometre race. Nadia Tatlow came in fourth for Queen’s, and fellow Gaels Liz Miller, Chelsey Wyrostok and Leah Larocque finished 10th through 12th.
Chris Brens, who finished 10th, had the best performance of the day for the men’s team, which finished seventh overall. The team chose to rest star runners Braden Novakowski and Robert Kitz in preparation for the OUA Finals, which will take place at the University of Western Ontario on October 27.
Two wins for basketball
Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams picked up wins in exhibition play Saturday at Bartlett Gym. Led by guard Baris Ondul’s 21-point game, the men’s team beat the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds 73-42 Saturday night. Rookies Nick DiDonato and Travis Mitchell also turned in strong performances with 12 and 11 points respectively.
Earlier in the afternoon, the women beat the Ste. Foy Dynamiques 82-72 behind a 17-point effort from rookie Christine Wallace.
The teams will continue exhibition play next week. The men host McGill at 4 p.m. Saturday in Bartlett Gym. The women will travel to the Maritimes to take on Cape Breton University and the University of Prince Edward Island.
Baseball loses playoff double-header
The men’s baseball team lost both games of their division final to the undefeated Durham Lords Saturday. The Gaels lost by scores of 5-2 and 7-3. Queen’s had beat the York Lions 6-5 the week before to advance to the final against the Lords. Durham will go on to the national championships, while the Gaels finish the year with a 3-9 regular season record and a 1-2 playoff record.
Field hockey takes two games
The field hockey team travelled to Toronto last weekend for three games. They picked up a 1-0 win over the Waterloo Warriors and a 3-0 victory over the Western Mustangs but lost 3-2 to the York Lions. Next weekend the team will travel to London to face the Guelph Gryphons, the Carleton Ravens and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
