Basketball cleans up in all-Kingston matchup
The Queen’s men’s basketball team won in a battle of two Kingston schools when they routed the St. Lawrence College Vikings 80-50 in exhibition play.
The first half was fairly even, with the Gaels leading 32-28 at halftime. Queen’s caught fire in the second half, shooting 63 per cent from the field throughout a 14-minute span.
Second-year forward Mitch Leger led all scorers with 28 points and eight rebounds.
Baris Ondul added 11 points while Simon Mitchell had nine points and five rebounds.
Rookie Jon Ogden continued to impress, scoring 11 points and hauling in eight rebounds.
The Gaels outscored the Vikings 48-22 in the final 20 minutes.
The Gaels’ next game is Oct. 12 at 8 p.m. in Bartlett Gym against Paul Smith College from Paul Smiths, NY.

Women’s lacrosse takes a win and two losses
The women’s lacrosse team opened regular season play with three games this weekend. The team beat the Guelph Gryphons 15-5, but lost 10-9 to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and 8-7 to the McGill Martlets. Lisa McLauglin had an outstanding weekend for the Gaels, recording 12 of the team’s 33 goals. Martha Ross added eight more for the Gaels and Hanna Landherr scored four times. The team is third in the OUA East Division and six points behind Toronto.

Rowing team pulls away with nine wins
The rowing team had another strong performance last weekend, winning nine races at the Head of the Trent Regatta in Peterborough.
The event, the largest-single day regatta in North America, featured an estimated 1,200 athletes.
One of the closest races of the day was the lightweight women’s four, where Queen’s squad of Christine Matusiak, Rebecca McWatters, Charlie Thiverge-Lortie and Nicole Bobbette with coxswain Carlie Bureau won the gold by 1.59 seconds over the University of Western Ontario’s team.
Gaels’ Nicole Campbell, Sara Richardson and Nick Pratt took home two golds.
Campbell won the club singles event, where she competed against individuals associated with both schools and clubs. She also teamed up with Connie Dayboll to win the university doubles event by more than a minute over McMaster University.
Richardson won the university lightweight women’s singles and partnered with Katya Herman to win the club double event.
Pratt won the university lightweight men’s singles and was part of the gold-winning men’s lightweight fours crew.
Both the heavyweight men’s and women’s fours also picked up golds in their races.

Field hockey wins one, loses one on Sunday
The women’s field hockey team faced off against the Waterloo Warriors and the Guelph Gryphons in Oakville on Sunday. They beat the Warriors 5-2, but lost to the OUA-leading Gryphons 7-2.
In the Waterloo game, the Gaels struck first with a goal from Hilary Piets. The Warriors tied the score, but Laura Robinson gave the Gaels a 2-1 lead going into halftime.
After the break, Kirsten Jewell scored two more goals for Queen’s. Gaels’ rookie Rebecca Hazell added another.
In their next game, Queen’s got off to a slow start against Guelph. Kirsten Jewell scored the lone early goal for the Gaels, who trailed 4-1 at halftime. Maggie Yeomans added another goal for Queen’s in the second half, but it was countered by three more from Guelph.
The Gaels take on the McGill Martlets Friday in Nepean.
