Former athletics director dies at 86

Last Friday, former Queen’s Athletics Director Al Lenard died at the age of 86. Lenard arrived at

Queen’s in 1946 and was a member of the football, basketball, softball, golf, swimming and track and

field teams. Following graduation, Lenard took a position at Queen’s as the successor of retiring Athletic

Director Pat Galasso. He held the position for 20 years and oversaw the growth of Queen’s Athletics

from 16 to 42 varsity teams. In addition to his contributions to Queen’s Athletics, he served a term

as president of Ontario University Athletics and was a board member of Canadian Interuniversity Sport.

Lenard is survived by his wife Joan and son Jim. A memorial will be held at 1 p.m. at the Robert J. Reid Funeral Home on March 13.
