Sports in Brief: Eight wins for Queen’s Varsity teams

Women’s Hockey

The Queen’s Women’s Hockey team played two close games during the second-last weekend of the OUA regular season at the Memorial Centre.

On Feb. 10, the Gaels faced off against the Nipissing Lakers. The Gaels would score the first two goals of the game: one goal from Sam Wood, ArtSci ’24, and the other from Emma McKnight, Sci ’24.

Despite the early lead, the teams were tied in the second period. The game remained 2-2 throughout regulation, with the Lakers securing a win in overtime.

Returning to the ice the next day, the Gaels had an opportunity to redeem their weekend with a game against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.

This time, the Gaels won the game in 1-0 shutout with the lone goal scored by Mikayla Cranney, ArtSci ’27.

The Gaels are third in the OUA East Division with a season record of 13-13, putting them in a playoff spot. Their last regular season games take place on Feb. 16 and 17 against the York Lions and Varsity Blues. Both games are away.

The first round of playoffs starts Feb. 21.

Men’s Hockey

Following the Carr-Harris Cup win on Feb. 8, the Queen’s Men’s Hockey team was back at the Memorial Centre on Feb. 10 for a game against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks.

Ending the regular season off a win, the Gaels outscored the Ridgebacks 6-3.

Jonathan Yantsis, ArtSci ’24, had a successful night, putting four goals in the back of the net. The other two goals were scored by Alex Robert, ArtSci ’24, and Cameron Tolnai, Comm ’27.

The first round of OUA playoffs begins Wednesday, Feb. 14 at the Memorial Centre as the Gaels take on the Concordia Stingers. The series is best of three.

Women’s Basketball

The Queen’s Women’s Basketball team traveled to Thunder Bay this weekend to compete against the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

The Gaels were victorious with a whopping 82-27 win.

Top Queen’s scorers were Julia Chadwick, MIR ’24, with 19 points and Emma Weltz, Nurs ’24, with 14 points.

The Gaels play their final two regular season games at home next weekend against the uOttawa Gee-Gees and Carleton Ravens. The first round of the OUA playoffs begins Feb. 21.

Queen’s is second in the OUA East division, with an 18-2 record, just behind the Carleton Ravens, who have a 19-1 record.

Men’s Basketball

The Queen’s Men’s Basketball team traveled to Thunder Bay for a game against the Thunderwolves this weekend.

Though the score of this game was closer than the women’s game, the Gaels pulled out a 98-77 win.

The Syllas brothers were the top scorers for this game, with Cole Syllas, Sci ’24, contributing 28 points and his Luka Syllas, ConEd ’24, adding 17.

The team has two regular season games left, playing uOttawa and Carleton in the ARC next weekend, after the women’s games. The first round of the OUA playoffs begins Feb. 21.

The Men’s team is also second in the OUA East division, with a 17-3 record. They’re behind uOttawa who have a record of 18-2.

Women’s Volleyball

Queen’s Women’s Volleyball had an outstanding weekend at home with back-to-back sweeps against the Guelph Gryphons.

On Friday, Feb. 9, the Gaels won the three sets 25-15, 25-8, and 25-22. Hannah Duchesneau, ArtSci ’24, lead the game in kills with 10. Amanda Siksna, ConEd ’25, lead in blocks with 5.0.

The following day, the Gaels won the sets 25-25, 25-20, and 25-18. This time Aimee Lemire, ConEd ’25, lead in kills with 12, though Duchesneau was close behind her with 11. Siksna lead in blocks again, this time with a 3.0.

Next weekend, the Gaels travel to the University of Western Ontario to play their final regular season games against the Mustangs before OUA playoffs begin on Feb. 24.

The Gaels are second overall in the OUA with a season record of 16-2. They’re just behind the Brock Badgers, who have a record of 17-2.

Men’s Volleyball

The Queen’s Men’s Volleyball team found success at home against the Guelph Gryphons this weekend.

On Feb. 9, the Gaels went down in the first set, but came back to win three sets to one. The scores of those sets were 13-25, 25-19, 25-23, and 25-23. Zig Licis, Sci ’24, lead the Gaels for kills with 14 and tied Izaak Zabjek, Kin ’26, for blocks with 3.0.

The following day also saw the Gaels win 3-1. The scores were 25-21, 28-26, 15-25, and 25-22. This time Erik Siksna, Comm ’24, lead the team in kills with 19 and tied Dax Tompkins, ArtSci ’24, for blocks with a 3.0.

They also travel to Western next weekend before starting playoffs on Feb. 24. The Gaels are second overall in the OUA with a season record of 14-4.
