Queen’s men’s rugby, football step up charity work

In the spirit of the Thanksgiving season, the Gaels are giving back to the community with fundraisers to affect change.

The men’s rugby team gave back in a big way with their traditionally sensational participation in Run for the Cure. The men raised a mammoth $20,407 by themselves for breast cancer research. Benjamin Cook and Grant Madu were the biggest individual fundraisers, raising $2,028 and $1,014 respectively towards the rugby effort.

Athletes from lots of other sports, but primarily women’s rugby, raised a further $5,539 to bring the varsity athletes’ total to $25,946.

The athletes ran, jogged, and walked in the five-kilometre race on Sunday, Oct. 6, wearing pink to show support for the cause. The money raised through the initiative will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Queen’s football has been collecting food for the local Partners in Mission Food Bank Kingston. Standing outside Metro last Saturday, the team encouraged people to donate 1,084 pounds of food.

The Gaels Tackle Hunger initiative will continue when they host the Guelph Gryphons at Richardson on Thursday, Oct. 10.

The game will start at 6 p.m., and food donations of non-perishable items will be collected. The game will also honour everyday community heroes such as police, military, firefighters, and paramedics.

Women’s soccer makes undefeated streak 11

The women’s soccer team had a winning weekend against the Trent Excalibur and the UOIT Ridgebacks.

On Saturday, Oct. 5, the Gaels held the Excalibur off for a 1-0 win. Cecilia Way scored the only goal of the game in the first half.

The next day, the Gaels shellacked the Ridgebacks. The Gaels pressed from the first whistle, getting their first goal on their first shot in the first minute from Christie Gray. Jamie Foot, Jenna Matsukubo, and Way would also tally in the first half.

Way’s goal, her ninth on the season, put her in sole possession of second place for the most goals scored this season in the OUA.

Gray would go on to score the fifth goal of the game in the second half, giving the Gaels a 5-1 win over the Ridgebacks.

The Gaels face the RMC Paladins in their next game on Sunday, Oct. 13. A win will clinch second place in the OUA East for the Gaels, and a bye to the quarterfinals.

Men’s soccer shutout in weekend series

The men’s soccer team played a set of weekend games against the Trent Excalibur and UOIT Ridgebacks.

The team started off the weekend with a scoreless match against Trent on Saturday, Oct. 6. The game was dominated by Queen’s, who had 11 corners to Trent’s one, and fired 20 shots at the Trent keeper.

However, only six of those shots were on goal, and none of them found the back of the net. The game ended as a nil-nil draw.

On Sunday, the team played the Ridgebacks. The Gaels struggled to keep up in the first half, falling behind 2-0 at halftime.

The Ridgebacks pulled away in the second half, scoring another pair of goals en route to a 4-0 win.

The Gaels play the RMC Paladins at Richardson Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 13 in their penultimate game of the regular season.
