The Queen’s men’s and women’s swim teams came back from the Carleton dual meet last weekend
21 first-place finishes in 29 events. In dual meets, two teams race head to head, so Queen’s was only
racing against Carleton swimmers. Gael Kyle Johansen said the meet was not a crucial one, but it
was a chance for athletes to qualify for the national championships. Swimmers qualify by meeting
a national time standard during the season.
“The dual meets are good to get racing experience, but they’re still official times,” Johansen said.
He said it’s the dual meets, such as the one at Carleton, where you can work on your fundamentals.
“It’s good for the technical stuff like starts. You can figure out how to pace yourself in the longer races,” Johansen said. “It’s really about getting experience.”
“The men’s team really picked up the slack,” Johansen said, adding that the rookies were also especially strong this season. Alexandra Hubbard won the women’s 50-metre backstroke with a time of 32.65 seconds and finished second in the women’s 100-metre backstroke and the women’s
200-metre backstroke. Women’s captain Erin Richards finished first in both of these events with times of 1 minute 10.81 seconds and 2 minutes 30.18 seconds respectively.
Faye Ling won both the women’s 200-metre and 400-metre freestyle with times of 2 minutes 12.87 seconds and 4 minutes 41.59 seconds respectively. She also won the women’s 100-metre freestyle. Queen’s is sending all swimmers to the provincial championships in Guelph next week. Over the winter break, the team spent time in Florida swimming four to five hours a day in preparation for the upcoming provincial championships. Since then, they have been tapering their training to allow their
muscles to rest and recover before the biggest meets of the year. Johansen credits a lot of their
success to the coaches. “The coaches are doing a fantastic job with the limited pool time we have and making us faster swimmers.”
