The Harry Potter fling

For a serious person like me, having a summer fling is as natural as a fish swimming on land.

According to my old Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, a fling is “a short time of satisfying one’s own desires, often with no sense of responsibility.” No flings of a romantic nature for me this year, thank you, but flings of other sorts? Yes please.

Back at home in hot, sunny Singapore, I have been ignoring my coursework for a few days, chatting with my parents for hours on end, and listening to my grandmas’ and aunts’ conversations.

I argue that I deserve a good series of summer flings this year. I have not been home for an entire year and have been studying non-stop since September. Now that I am home, I should be happily enjoying myself, instead of studying.

I have plans. They include shopping with friends in the busy malls, and eating all the food that I have dreamt of for so long. I also want to pick apart the CSI game that my friend lent to me, and of course, reread all my Harry Potter books.

Ah, Harry Potter: my main summer fling. The sixth installment of the series, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, will be released on July 16. My goal is to finish the book the very weekend it comes out.

Considering the release date is just a few days shy of my exam for Cognitive Psychology, it definitely qualifies as somewhat irresponsible and ill-advised.

What is my reasoning? There will always be more exams, but the book will be first released only once. Harry Potter is a huge part of my life.

I hope you all get the chance to get your heads nice and empty before next year starts, as Professor Dumbledore would say.

And enjoy your own summer flings, whatever they may be.
