The University’s seeking input to shape the vision of Queen’s before its 200th birthday.

On Sept. 17, Principal Patrick Deane sent a mass e-mail to Queen’s students, faculty, and staff introducing the new draft for the Queen’s Bicentennial Vision—a strategic document meant to outline Queen’s long-term goals as the school approaches its 200th anniversary in 2041. The report lays out priorities across academics, research, and student life, aiming to guide the University through the changing academic landscape and institutional change.

The paper’s first draft was shared on Jan. 17, with Deane explaining he wants to ensure the University’s future has “a particular shape and direction” by its own choice, rather than by a result of external decisions.

Deane went on to explain in the Sept. 17 e-mail that this new draft followed months of consultation with an advisory group, which comprised mostly senior administrators as well as some student representatives, such as AMS President Jana Amer and SGPS President Dawood Tullah.

“This draft document was shaped through months of consultation and discussion with members of our community following the release of my discussion paper earlier this year, and written by an advisory group,” Deane wrote.

In the e-mail, Deane invites students, faculty, and staff to review the draft and to share feedback through a survey that will close on Oct. 31. The Board of Trustees will then vote to approve the final report in December.

The draft sets eight goals: to be Canada’s benchmark for academic excellence, lead globally in focused research, deliver a transformative student experience, embed leadership and innovation, advance reconciliation, inclusion, and sustainability, achieve financial sustainability, enhance its global reputation, and operate with focus, discipline, and strategic clarity.

“It [the draft] affirms the values that have guided us for generations while calling on us to adapt with purpose in the face of shifting public expectations, global uncertainty, and rapid digital transformation, all within challenging financial parameters,” the e-mail read.
