Varsity Sports in Brief: Top performances from September

Football remains undefeated while rugby and cross-country sit among the country’s top-ranked programs

Several Queen’s varsity teams closed September near the top of their respective standings.

With the first month of the school year complete, football remains undefeated, Women’s Rugby sits among the country’s highest-ranked programs, and both cross-country teams have opened their seasons with podium finishes. Women’s Soccer also enters October with a winning record while the men’s team sits with a slight losing record as the Gaels move into the next stretch of their fall schedules.

Football

Queen’s Football enters October undefeated at 4-0 and ranked fourth in the country.

The Gaels opened their season with a 28-12 road win over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Aug. 30 before defeating the Waterloo Warriors 49-22 at Richardson Stadium on Sept. 12. They followed with a 55-17 win over the Carleton Ravens on Sept. 19 and a 41-20 victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sept. 26.

Queen’s has scored 173 points through four games while allowing 71. Against Ottawa, the Gaels trailed 20-14 at halftime before scoring 27 unanswered points in the second half.

Queen’s travels to London on Oct. 3 to face the Western Mustangs at 1 p.m.

Women’s Rugby

Queen’s Women’s Rugby enters October at 3-1 and ranked third in the latest U Sports rankings.

The Gaels opened their season with a 116-0 win over York on Sept. 5 before defeating Brock 60-7 at Nixon Field on Sept. 12. Queen’s suffered its first loss of the season on Sept. 19, falling 22-19 to Guelph.

Women’s Rugby bounced back on Sept. 26 with a 91-5 win over McMaster at Nixon Field. Kennedi Stevenson, ArtSci ’28, scored four tries, while Tatum Lougheed, Kin ’28, finished with 21 points.

They’ll return to Nixon Field on Oct. 3 at 5 p.m. to host the Laurier Golden Hawks. The Gaels then close their regular season on the road against Western on Oct. 10. The two games will lead into the OUA playoffs, which begin on Oct. 17, with the OUA Championship scheduled for Oct. 30.

The Gaels enter the final stretch at 3-1 after scoring 286 points through four games, including 207 across its wins over York and McMaster.

Men’s Rugby

Queen’s Men’s Rugby is fighting for a playoff spot after starting the season 1-2.

After winning their first game on the road against Laurier, the Gaels were blown out at the hands of the Guelph Gryphons. Their home opener was a narrow 23-22 defeat versus the Western Mustangs.

They look to get back to .500 on Oct. 3, when they welcome Waterloo. They’ll continue their season visiting the Brock Badgers before ending their season during homecoming against Trent.

Cross Country

Queen’s Cross Country opened its season with podium finishes from both the men’s and women’s teams in each of their first two meets.

At the Ronald C. Hoffmann Invitational in Canton, N.Y. on Sept. 19, both Queen’s teams finished first overall. The women’s team followed with another first-place finish at the Capital XC Challenge in Ottawa on Sept. 26, while the men’s team placed second.

Those results have the men’s team ranked third nationally, while the women’s team enters October tied for fourth.

Olivia Baggley, ArtSci ’27, led the Women’s team with a fourth-place finish at the Capital XC Challenge, while Saul Taler, Kin ’29, placed third on the men’s side. Rosalyn Barrett, HealthSci ’29, Elizabeth Vroom, Sci ’27, Caleigh Pribaz, Kin ’26, Charlie Mortimer, ArtSci ’30, and Owen Danby, ArtSci ’27, also finished inside the top 10.

Women’s Soccer

Queen’s Women’s Soccer enters October at 4-2-2 following back-to-back victories.

The Gaels opened the season with a 2-1 road win over Carleton on Aug. 30 and added September victories over Trent, RMC, and Laurentian. Queen’s also earned draws against Carleton and TMU.

In their final game of September, the Gaels defeated Laurentian 2-0 at Richardson Stadium on Sept. 27.

Men’s Soccer

Queen’s Men’s Soccer enters October at 2-3-2 after going unbeaten in its final two games of September.

The Gaels earned their first win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Carleton at Richardson Stadium on Sept. 11 before falling 4-1 to Toronto Metropolitan University on Sept. 13. Queen’s responded with a 1-0 road win over Royal Military College on Sept. 19, with Franco Di Giovanni, ArtSci ’27, scoring the game’s only goal in the 36th minute.

Queen’s closed September with a 0-0 draw against Laurentian at Richardson Stadium on Sept. 27. Daniel Clarke, ArtSci ’27, made five saves as the Gaels recorded their second consecutive clean sheet.

The team will travel to North Bay to face Nipissing on Oct. 3 at noon before playing Laurentian in Sudbury on Oct. 4, also at noon.
