Men’s hockey extends win streak to six

After an emotional win against RMC at the Carr-Harris Cup on Thursday, the men’s hockey team extended their winning streak to six with their 4-3 win against the Carleton Ravens on Saturday night in Ottawa.

In Saturday’s matchup, Slater Doggett — who on Thursday scored two goals in the Carr-Harris Cup — was dominant for the second straight game. With Queen’s down 3-2 to Carleton late in the third period, Doggett scored the tying goal with one second left on the clock and subsequently won the game in overtime. The forward’s two-goal performance handed the Gaels their 18th win of the season.

With Queen’s and Carleton tied for second in the OUA East, this game was integral to the Gaels’ position going into the playoffs. While McGill has already clinched top spot in the division, whoever finishes second will be guaranteed home-ice advantage until the OUA finals. Going into the final weekend of the season, the Gaels are now three points up on the Ravens.

With the victory over their rivals, the Gaels have matched their record-setting 18-win season from 2016-17. With two games left against Ottawa and Nipissing next weekend, the Gaels have an opportunity to enter the playoffs as one of the OUA’s hottest teams.

Women’s basketball improves to 16-3

In their most recent game, the York Lions proved to be no match for the women’s basketball team. With their 73-53 win over the Lions, Queen’s extended their winning streak to five games.

Despite the 20-point margin of victory, the Gaels spent the majority of the game behind the Lions. Not only was Queen’s down 20-9 at the end of the first quarter, but they were down three points at the half.

From that point on, the Gaels looked like a different team. In the second half, they outscored the Lions by a sum of 23 points. Their comeback in large part was thanks to Abby Dixon and Veronika Lavergne, who finished the game with 16 points apiece, while first-year Sophie de Goede registered 11 rebounds.

The win solidified Queen’s firm grip on second in the OUA East with a 16-3 record. While overtaking the Carleton Ravens for first in the division is unlikely with just four games left — the Ravens are the only undefeated team in the OUA — the Gaels have an eight-point buffer between third-place Ottawa Gee-Gees. Queen’s will host U of T and Ryerson this coming weekend at the ARC.

Men’s basketball gets crucial win in push for playoff positioning

The men’s basketball team proved to be in good form this weekend, as they took down the York Lions 93-68 in Toronto. With their regular season coming to a close, each win is critical for the Gaels. They’re currently fifth in the OUA East and are hoping to secure a home playoff berth.

Currently with 22 points, Queen’s is battling for the third spot in the OUA East with Ottawa and Ryerson, who both sit just four points ahead of the Gaels.

Queen’s will host U of T and Ryerson this coming weekend in what will be their last pair of regular-season home games.
