Students continued to get ticketed by the police the weekend before school started, raking in a total of 35 charges from Thursday to Sunday nights.

Kingston police spokesperson Mike Weaver said the number was a marked decrease from the 77 tickets handed out over the course of three nights at the start of Orientation Week.

“It’s been much quieter,” Weaver said. “I think students are getting the message that that kind of behaviour is not going be tolerated by the community at large and the police.”

He said officers laid the majority of charges in the Ghetto for liquor licence infractions, including possession of alcohol in an open container, public intoxication and underage drinking.

Single tickets were also handed out for jay-walking, littering and noise.

“There’s a time to party and a time to have fun and [the police] are all for that,” Weaver said. “But it has to be done safely and responsibly with consideration to your neighbours.”

Weaver said 11 tickets were handed out Wednesday night, four on Thursday, 17 on Saturday and three on Sunday.

Police also put four students in cells to sleep off the effects of alcohol earlier last week.

“If someone can’t look after themselves because they are so intoxicated or are by themselves, they can take advantage of our overnight accommodations until they can take care of themselves,” Weaver said.
