The men’s hockey team lost 3-0 to the York Lions in its home opener Friday night at the Memorial Centre but rebounded Saturday afternoon with its first victory of the season, a 7-2 win over the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Ridgebacks. Jeffrey Johnstone and Clinton McCullough both scored twice for the Gaels, and captain Jon Lawrance and Scott Kenway each chipped in a goal and two assists. Brady Morrison made 31 saves for the win. The Gaels return to action next weekend when they will play the Guelph Gryphons and Brock Badgers on the road.

The men’s rugby team clinched first place in the OUA East Friday, posting a 34-20 win over the Brock Badgers on home turf at Kingston Field.
The Badgers beat the Gaels 22-6 in last year’s OUA Final.
Scoring for the Gaels were Colin Alexander, Graham Watt, Graeme Dibden, Alistair Clark and Scott Kyle.
The Gaels will finish their regular season at home next Saturday when they host the RMC Paladins at Kingston Field.

The Ottawa Gee-Gees men’s football team didn’t live up to the hype Saturday afternoon, falling 38-16 to the Gaels at Richardson Stadium. Ottawa held Queen’s running back Mike Giffin to 72 yards on 21 carries, marking only his second game of the year with less than 100 yards, but the Gee-Gees couldn’t contain the Gaels’ passing attack; quarterback Dan Brannagan threw for 341 yards and four touchdowns. With the win, Queen’s improves to 7-0, and Ottawa falls to 3-4.

The women’s rugby team was knocked out of the playoffs yesterday when the Trent Excalibur beat them 20-7 in their first-round game in Peterborough.
Ashley McIntyre scored the Gaels’ lone try, with Emily Stern converting it for the extra two points.
The team finishes the year with two wins and four losses.
